Tour of Savannah

With many walking/hiking/biking miles put on our weary bodies, when we arrived in Savannah, which was the last leg of the trip, we decided a trolley tour as opposed to a walking tour of the city was in order … the heat and humidity really had not relented at all.
This was our first look at Gertrude as we stepped onto the trolley tour bus. Unaware at this point that she was our guide, but because of her attire, I asked if I could take her picture.
Gertrude proved to be our tour guide and got her “second wind” and gave us what I would say might possibly have been the best tour in all of Savannah. She was a spicy southern belle that both entertained and captivated all those of us on board her trolley, regaling us with her animated tales and gossip of this city in years gone by.
It was an interactive tour that saw different actors, depicting historical characters from Savannah’s early days, coming onboard the trolley at different locations to tell their own interesting stories.
I’d say we got the best “bang for our buck” from Gertrude and Lisa, the bus driver who, with her deadpan remarks and her Dollar Store fan, tried to cool off Gertrude (folks, it was stinkin hot) all the while holding onto the steering wheel of the trolley!
Old Savannah Tours

Gertrude claimed this cyclist spent every day riding the streets of Old Savannah carrying the American flag

Like the cyclist with the flag, the story here is that this young woman and her dog, who are now posthumously honoured and immortalized in bronze, used to spend their days on the riverbank, her waving a brightly coloured piece of fabric to the boats and men coming up the river to Savannah.
